Today we’re taking a look at the home and away jerseys of France, as modelled by Karim Benzema to the left there.

All World Cup 2010 jerseys are available to see and buy in our World Cup 2010 store, but the idea here is that we take an honest and semi-critical look at the home and away shirts of all 32 teams at World Cup 2010. Remember, everything below is just personal opinion / kneejerk reaction and I’ve got no fashion credentials other than accidentally seeing about four episodes of Project Runway. So whether you agree of disagree I’d love to get your reaction to these shirts in the comments.

France Home Shirt

The royal blue colour of the France jersey always looks good in my opinion, but it’s the red and white around the mid-section that I’m not fond of here. I know it’s meant to represent the blue, white and red of the French flag, but the pattern just seems a bit… random. Unfinished even, like the two sections were meant to meet in the middle but didn’t quite make it. If I was feeling cheeky the I’d suggest an alternative pattern. Like maybe Thierry Henry’s handprints. But I’m not, so I won’t.

A much more successful attempt to incorporate the tricolore can be found if you look a little higher up. All adidas jerseys carry three stripes on the shoulders, and this one is no exception. But there’s a band of red running between the second and third stripe, producing a subtle but clear pattern of blue, then white, then red on the shoulder. I love seeing examples of team specific design within the standard template, and the shoulders of the French home jersey are a perfect example.

France Away Shirt

The white away jersey allows the three striped tricolore on the shoulders to stand out even more. Definitely a good thing. Meanwhile the thin grey vertical stripes on the body prevent the white from being too white and making you go blind. I quite like the collar too, with a nice mix of blue and gold. It’s somewhat rare for the away shirt to trump the home shirt, but I’m pretty sure that’s what’s happened here. Hopefully France will wear the away shirts vs Uruguay in Group A, and then find themselves facing another blue team in the knockout rounds.

We continue our review of World Cup 2010 kits with a look at what Mexico will be wearing in South Africa. As mentioned before, I have zero fashion credentials. Unless sitting through The Devil Wears Prada and finding it reasonably enjoyable counts. Which I’m pretty sure it doesn’t. But I can offer an honest reaction that hopefully stays away from being either too snarky or too serious.

Big news is that between World Cup 2006 and World Cup 2010, Mexico made the switch. The big switch. From Nike to adidas. So the home and away versions of their three stripe manufactured World Cup 2010 kits (as modeled very seriously by Francisco Palencia to the left there) can be found below.

Mexico Home Shirt

If you’re thinking “that looks a bit plain” then I’d agree with you. At first glance anyway. Because after a few looks at the Mexico home shirt I’ve come to think of it as very clean and simple, in a good way. The green, white and red colours of El Tri are very clearly represented. Green body, red stripes on the shoulders, and white collar with a red trim. Everything just right. Except… my only complaint would be the armpits. As with all adidas World Cup 2010 jerseys, there’s a splash of colour under the arms. This works better with some jerseys than with others. Unfortunately the effect in this Mexico home jersey is that the wearer appears to bleeding from the armpits. Like maybe it’s on a bit too tight (which may be true in the case of Francisco Palincia, above. Go up a size man!)

Possibly the best thing about this jersey is the underlying pattern. As with the adidas South Africa jersey, the body of this Mexico jersey features a symbolic pattern. For South Africa it was the flag, for Mexico it’s feathers, which apparently represent the Eagle Warrior (the bravest in the Aztec army) and also the eagle on the Mexican Football Federation crest.

Mexico Away Shirt

Mexico’s away shirts have been white for as long as I can remember. But no more. For World Cup 2010 Mexico’s away jerseys will be black. It’s such a big change that you’ve got to admire the balls it took to make this decision. I’d say the black suits the feather motif nicely, and also helps the red and green elements stand out. Even better, armpits are green. So no armpit blood here. Only complaint is that the black design means there’s no room for white, and so one of the “El Tri” colours is missing.

Today we turn our sartorial eyes to Argentina, and the home and away shirts the team will wear at World Cup 2010.

Argentina Home Shirt

I’ve always been a big fan of Argentina’s albiceleste stripes. It’s one of the iconic football images, even more so since so few teams wear a similar style. So this jersey is off to a good start. What I’m not entirely happy with is the way the stripes are interrupted. There’s a separate panel on the shoulders to accommodate the adidas three stripes, and that panel interrupts the flow if you ask me. Couldn’t adidas have gotten their striped in there without ruining the more important albiceleste stripes? So I’m not 100% sold on this version, but it’s still a classic design, and will likely look good when matched with black shorts and the black socks.

Argentina Away Shirt

I’m giving this 10 out of 10. Not just because the dark blue contrasts nicely with the white trim, but because this kit is a very clear nod to the Argentina away shirt of the 1986 World Cup. Don’t believe me? Here’s a snapshot of Diego Maradona against England from that year:

With Diego Maradona now in charge of the team, and Leo Messi doing Maradona-esque things with the ball, I see this away shirt as both homage to the past and optimism that the current team can maybe match that World Cup winning team of 1986.

The USA has a complicated history with jerseys. Unlike other teams, they’ve never 100% settled on a definitive style, arguably to the detriment of the team’s identity.

For example, Argentina has stuck with sky blue and white stripes. Italy doesn’t deviate from blue. Brazil has been canary yellow ever since 1950. But USA jerseys have switched both colour and pattern a few times over the years. Usually a mix of either red, white or blue, but let’s not forget the incredible(y bad?) denim and stars home shirt from 1994.

USA Home Shirt

For their World Cup 2010 adventure, the USA will be wearing something a lot simpler than in 1994, with zero denim. So that’s already a plus. In fact, they’re actually going a little bit retro, with the diagonal stripe (or sash, although stripe sounds better) echoing/honouring the stripe of the jerseys worn at the 1950 World Cup, when USA famously beat England 1-0. Co-incidence that the US plays England at World Cup 2010? Possibly not.

The thing I genuinely like about this jersey is that it’s simple. Possibly some will be disappointed with just how white the shirt is, and the fact that the red and blue touches are minimal (basically: red trim on sleevs, blue collar). But I’d argue that the mostly red crest and the blue Nike swoosh add a second (but still minimal) layer of colour, and the fact that the diagonal stripe is white and backgrounded as opposed to red or blue, ensures that that one feature doesn’t dominate the jersey.

I also like that while this shirt echoes the 1950 shirt, it isn’t a carbon copy. Almost as if the players are being challenged to make their own history rather than living entirely in the shadow of an earlier team. Or maybe I’m reading too much into that stripe.

My only criticism would be the collar. Because the jersey is already bare bones, the simple crew neck collar is maybe a little too simple. I’d have preferred to see either a v-neck or maybe some sort of poppable collar.

That said, the minimal colours of the shirt make a lot more sense when you see the full uniform, as worn by Clint Dempsey at the top of this post. It’s predominantly white from head to toe. Where earlier US kits have been cluttered, this World Cup 2010 kit has clarity.

USA Away Shirt

The away jersey is basically a remix of the home shirt. The diagonal stripe is still white, with the rest of the shirt being blue, with red trimmings around the sleeve, collar, and the outline of the stripe.

And yes. This time it definitely looks like a sash. I think it was Chris who said that Clint Dempsey looked like he’d won Miss Texas when these jerseys were announced back in February.

But if you can get past the sash thing, I think you can make a very strong case for this shirt. It mixes the three key colours of the American flag into the shirt, is similar enough yet completely different to the home shirt, and seems to balance nicely on that line between retro and modern.

I think it’s fair to say that the new England home kit from Umbro was released with quite a bit of hype in 2009. Probably too much. OK, definitely too much. Overshadowing the national anthems with the big reveal on matchday vs Slovakia was unnecessary.

But now all that hubbub has hushed up, we can take a look at the shirts the England players will wear at World Cup 2010 in South Africa and judge the design on its merits, rather than through the hype-goggles of last year. I’ve been practicing my Tim Gunn impression, so let’s go take a look.

England Home Shirt

What can I say? It’s white. It’s very very white. Even the usually gold star above the crest is white. You could argue that so much white is dull. Or that no thought has gone into it. But this is a radical departure from the last 20 plus years of kits, which were all white with a splash of something else. This is white with a splash of white. But, for me at least, it works.

The FA crest and the red Umbro logo are just enough to prevent this being boring, and the overall feel is – as with many shirts – retro (especially those pop collars.) But definitely in a good way.

England Away Shirt

The away shirt is retro red instead of retro white, and a definite nod to the red shirts worn in the 1966 World Cup final. But somehow it’s not quite as successful.

I think the problem might be the two different shades of red and the absence of the pop collar, both of which which break the retro feel and make you aware that this isn’t really a jersey from the middle of last century. Maybe that’s a good thing if you don’t want to wear a jersey from the middle of last century, but if asked to choose between these two I’d go home every time.

When playing with such flair, such panache, not to mention toting a European trophy in behind, rolling in style is mandatory. And style often means fresh, new, crisp.

Looks like the individualistic style will have to come from the football, then. Adidas has run out nearly identical kits for Spain – the home red and the black away – which mirror their “generic” line for the 2010 World Cup.

At least on the front. In the back it’s all party, all the time. Does this make the Spanish kit the World Cup shirt equivalent of the mullet? It just might.

Spain Home Shirt

The collar work and colors are different, but it’s clearly the same shirt without much attention to detail. And quite frankly, a nation like Spain deserves detail. Of course if you were to bring the various regions together into a fashionable, tributary compromise, you’d be up for some sort of lifetime peace mediation award, so maybe generic is all for the best.

But it’s very simple and very much cut from the adidas World Cup 2010 line. Not necessarily bad, but bland.

However, on the back you have La Furia Roja (Spanish nickname – The Red Fury) written in Gothic font across the upper collar. And if you didn’t know better, you’d think they were in an East Los Angeles gang. Adidas really dropped the ball in not plastering in giant letters across the abdomen in an arc.

Spain Away Shirt

It definitely looks good – I’ve always enjoyed the contrast of black and red, even if minimal – but it also bears a striking resemblance to the black away kits of Mexico and Germany, both by adidas. Not even trying to fool us with the color. The German away kit is, as Daryl put it, “black with a touch of red”. Sound familiar? Though the Spanish flag is quite apparent in the three adidas lines down the arms – red, yellow, red – and that’s a nice touch.

And then in the back it’s all party with a black-on-black tramp stamp in the lower lumbar portion, probably a butterfly, which really makes the kit.

Perhaps not a butterfly. It looks more like a third eye, maybe Xavi’s – the one he uses to see the passes only he can. (Any actual information welcome.)

It also has the same Gothic font across the top in R.F.E.F., or Real Federación Española de Fútbol – the Spanish football governing body. No secret messages there. Unless….

One thing easily agreed upon is their marketing – sending undercover players into the stores as salesmen. Every country should be doing this.
