World Cup visitors will stay longer and spend more

Posted on 29 April 2010 by halahuya

Updated projections on the economic impact of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, released today by global audit and advisory firm Grant Thornton, indicate that there are a number of reasons for South Africans to be optimistic.

“We have revised the figures post the world-wide recession and major ticket sales phases, and some of the numbers are encouraging,” said Gillian Saunders, Principal of Grant Thornton Strategic Solutions.

Although Grant Thornton’s projected number of World Cup visitors is 373,000, down from 483,000, it is expected that many of the visitors will stay longer and spend more.

“Indications are that overseas tourists will stay an average of 18 days compared to the 14 days used in the original projections,” said Saunders. “Average overseas tourist spend per trip is also forecast to be up, at R30,200 compared to the R22,000 used before.”

The average spend forecast is based on an analysis of current tourist spends in South Africa as well as dipstick surveys of potential visitors and expenditure by visitors to SA for other sporting events such as the Lions’ Tour.

Foreign World Cup visitors are expected to attend an average of five football matches per person, up from the 3.4 matches previously expected. This compares to an average of 2.6 matches attended by foreigners at the World Cup in Germany in 2006. Going to more matches means visitors are likely to stay in the country for a longer period and therefore, while daily spends remain similar, total trip spend increases.

“It must be understood that some 105,000 of the 373,000 visitors to South Africa over this period are expected to be non-ticket holders; 85,000 of whom would come from Africa for a short visit. This 105,000 is down 16% on the 125,000 non-ticket holders projected previously,” said Saunders.

The Gross economic impact will be R93 billion, with 62 per cent expected to be generated pre-2010 and 38 per cent during the course of this year. Foreign tourism will account for 16 per cent of the gross impact. The majority of economic spend comes from national governments spend on infrastructure and some operational expenditure. This has increased significantly compared to original budgets, from R17,4 billion (2007) to R30,3 billion, with a further R9 billion or more spend by cities and provinces.

Net additional economic impact in 2010 is 0.54 per cent of GDP (comprised of an estimated 0.48 per cent from net additional foreign tourism and 0.06 per cent FIFA spending). This is significant, since GDP growth this year is estimated at 2.0 to 2.5 per cent of which 0.5 per cent is accounted for by a single event.

In terms of the World Cup impact on jobs, the figures are very encouraging. The number of annual jobs sustained in total is 695,000. Of these, 280,000 annual jobs will be sustained in 2010 and 174,000 by the net additional economic activity in this year. This is an economic measure of equivalent annual jobs sustained by this amount of economic activity, and not new jobs created.

“We continue to be upbeat about the impact of the World Cup,” said Saunders. “the stadia will be full and it will be great event; the profiling of South Africa and future spin-offs have always been the real benefit of hosting an event of this magnitude.”

Deco: We are not favourites

Posted on 28 April 2010 by halahuya

Deco has claimed that Portugal’s inexperience at the highest level means that they cannot be considered favourites for the World Cup in South Africa.

Deco was a part of the squad that struggled through the qualifiers and were forced to battle through a two-legged play-off against Bosnia-Herzegovina to book their ticket for the tournament but, despite their poor record under coach Carlos Queiroz, the Portuguese are still considered to be in with a good chance of reaching the latter stages. Deco, however, has played down their expectations.

“A lot of the players in the Portugal squad in 2006 are no longer part of the set-up, so we’ve got a lot of players who’ll be playing in their first major competition. I think that the quality is just as high, though we don’t have the same level of experience we had in 2006,” Deco told FIFA.

“The favourites are those national teams with a World Cup pedigree, something that Portugal, who have never won the trophy, don’t have. So we can’t be considered among the favourites. That said, we do have a team boasting plenty of quality, with great players and which can go a long way at the finals.

“It’s not easy to win the World Cup. After all, there’s a good reason why so few countries have done it so far. There are great teams that have never won a World Cup, because often the difference can be made by tiny details, like having a bit of luck at a decisive moment.”

Deco also reacted to claims that Portugal were over-reliant on world record midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo.

”We won several games without Cristiano and equally we’ve won games with him on the field,” he said. ”Nowadays you just don’t get big teams depending on just one player. Manchester United have done very well since Ronaldo left, Madrid have won games without him, as have Portugal.

”Of course you notice the absence of any great player, there’s no doubt about that, but the Portuguese national side isn’t dependent on him. It’s only natural that teams want their best players available and miss them when they’re not. That being the case, given he’s one of the world’s best players, he is important to us.”

2010 Soccer World Cup Accommodation in South Africa

Posted on 28 April 2010 by admin

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The 2010 soccer World Cup to be held in South Africa is edging ever so much closer to reality. World cup accommodation and 2010 accommodation are two phrases that are foremost in peoples’ minds, whether you are a South African or a tourist.

No wonder that headlines were made recently in the media about website fraud regarding world cup accommodation in South Africa. Alarming as it may seem, these elements will always go hand in hand with such a tournament, irrespective of where in the world it is held.

Is there a solution to being absolutely sure you are dealing with people with integrity and not a false website? I believe there is.

Unfortunately one or two con-artists can dramatically influence the perception of a country and a nation as a whole, and that will never change in this world of greed. It must be said immediately that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of property owners with integrity and honesty who would like to offer 2010 accommodation to tourists and probably at a cheaper price that can be obtained elsewhere.

These owners pride themselves on the standard of the world cup accommodation they offer and the lengths they would go to, to satisfy their guests with pure South African hospitality.

How does one then ensure when arranging world cup accommodation that one is in fact dealing with someone reputable?

Well, it is not easy, because all these property owners will firstly have their own website or advertise on a website of someone else, relative to 2010 accommodation. Secondly, all property owners will ask for an upfront, not refundable deposit, normally 50%. This is standard business practice and nobody can blame them for this.

My advice to anyone booking world cup accommodation via a website, is to ensure that when they are dealing with a private property owner, they will be able to track down the owner at a later stage, should it be necessary.

The best way to do this is to demand from the property owner a certified copy of his/her South African Identification document as well as other proof of residence, such as a utility bill, before paying over any deposits to the owner. Maybe in addition, call for proof that the bank account to which the deposit will be made is in the owners name.

The chances of fraud occurring with established guest houses are much smaller, as these are registered businesses and they have nowhere to hide. However, one will pay a premium on tariffs as these establishments are generally more expensive than that of private property owners.

Whichever way one looks at it, the extreme majority of website owners advertising world cup accommodation are pure in their intentions and can be relied upon to deliver the goods. You just need to ensure that you find the right ones.

FIFA World Cup 2010 – A Missed Tourism Opportunity For South Africa

Posted on 26 April 2010 by admin

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The FIFA World Cup in South Africa will soon be upon us and as with any worldwide event like this, there is immense public debate of how well the preparations are going. For South Africa, this is the first time they have hosted the FIFA World Cup and the eyes of the world will be upon them, perhaps with even more scrutiny than previous hosts. This is a magnificent opportunity to sell this wonderful country and all it has to offer international visitors. The latest reports are that ticket sales are not going as well as hoped and some qualifying nations are reporting public concerns over safety for their teams and supporters. South Africa has invested a huge sum of money in preparing the stadia and putting in place transport infrastructure to ensure the games are enjoyed by all the fans. Perhaps the most concerning areas for potential fans, looking to attend the World Cup, are the costs for accommodation and internal flights.

I am aware of prices for internal flights being offered at 4 to 5 times their normal price for the time of year. This doesn’t just impact fans but also those living in South Africa. In their wisdom, the government has decided that their will be a national school holiday throughout the World Cup period. For working parents this presents enough problems, but if you were to contemplate going away on holiday during this time then you will come up against the same problem that fans are having – extortionate prices! There is currently an investigation underway involving a number of the key airline carriers in South Africa around price fixing – this is further exacerbated by the complete lack of flights during this time. Hopefully the government will get on top of this and sort out this situation, as it will undoubtedly put many fans off.

The second area of concern is accommodation prices. At this point it is worth pointing out that after Sydney hosted the last Olympics, instead of seeing an upturn in visitors after the event, there was a dramatic decrease in tourists for the next three years! Much of this decrease in tourism was put down to the prices being charged during the Olympics. The same thing is happening in South Africa. Many accommodation owners are charging 5, 6 7+ times more than their normal rates. This short term profiteering, known as ‘gouging’, is ridiculous. Fans are being “ripped off” and this is leaving many soccermu.com” title=”football”>football supporters with the only decision not to come to South Africa. This is such a shame as the quality of the accommodation offered by guest houses, B&B’s and self catering owners is generally far higher than that in many other countries. Of course, there will always be corporate packages that will take up these high prices to entertain their clients but for the average soccermu.com” title=”football”>football fan this will be a World Cup that is an expense too far. What a shame when the country has so much to offer fans during their breaks between games. I really feel this is going to be a “lost opportunity” for the South Africa tourism industry and that venue owners are going to regret the high prices they are charging. Hopefully they will come to their senses, along with the airlines, and lower their prices. Otherwise how else will the numbers coming to the World Cup reach anywhere near the expected 1 million.
